The whole country is experiencing fierce cold these days. Snowfall on the mountains, rain in the plains, and cold winds are blowing. The icy winds and moist winds being drawn from the sea create a cold wave, which results in the temperature decreasing, especially in the states of North India.
Dense fog has covered Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar for the last two days. Visibility has dropped to zero, which leaves people shivering with cold and leads to long traffic jams at various places. Such weather is, quite clearly, affecting normal life, with air services and train services being disturbed as well.
Weather conditions in the country in the last 24 hours-
Cold Day Conditions prevailed during the past 24 hours in Uttar Pradesh, South Punjab and South Haryana. Cold wave conditions were experienced in a large number of places in Telangana as well Himachal Pradesh. Ground frost was witnessed in Chhattisgarh. Dense fog conditions prevailed in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.
Foggy conditions prevailed in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and northern-west Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, north-west Madhya Pradesh and north interior Odisha with visibility ranging from 0 to 100 meters in the morning and evening.
Alert for fresh western disturbance becoming active-
Meteorological Department indicates that the 7 days will be characterized by snowstorms in high altitude areas, rains for the plains region with fog and cold wave. “This is a low-pressure area over Punjab adjoining Pakistan,” said an official. Chhattisgarh and Bay of Bengal are, however, saturated with low-pressure areas. “There is also a low pressure developing in the Arabian Sea.
North-west India will expect an introduction of a new western disturbance from January 10 to 12 such that its effects will be showering light rain on January 10. Western disturbance is in evidence in the form of a trough in the middle and upper troposphere while cyclonic circulation is also prevalent in Afghanistan.

The Meteorological Department has issued an important forecast for January 6th. This day carries with it heavy rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Rain, with thunderstorm activity, is expected on the 5th and 6th in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. Spotted showers and snowfall across northwest Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have also been predicted for January 6.
Light to moderate rain has also been predicted for the 7th and 8th of January for all states of Northeast India. Cold day conditions are likely in some areas of Himachal Pradesh. Dense fog and cold wave are also expected in parts of North Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Delhi and some other regions.
Alert of rain and snowfall in Himachal-Jammu Kashmir-
The Meteorological Department forecasts heavy snowfall in Kashmir and Chenab Valley during the night of Sunday into the morning of Monday. This Chillai Kalan time in Jammu and Kashmir will extend for 15 days more as 25 days have passed. It will end on January 30, and from thereon will begin the Chillai-Khurd and Chillai-Bachha periods, which will be a very cold experience for Kashmir.
Even in Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department has given an orange alert for Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, under which snowfall and rains are expected on January 5 and 6. At the same time, there is a possibility of rain in the plains until January 7. After that, on January 8, the weather is expected to be clear.
